Cut It in Eight: The 8 Best Pizzas in Queenstown You Should Definitely Try

The only people who won’t love eating pizza are the ones who were already dead before it even emerged.

Did you get my point? It’s almost impossible not to like pizza! If we call a baby a bundle of joy, I call a pizza a pie (or round) of joy, and you can’t disagree with that.

I’ve loved the ham and cheese flavour the most since I was young. There was a now-defunct pizza store near our home where my mum always bought this flavour for us. I can say that pizza was an integral part of my childhood.

That love for pizza never faded; it only grew stronger over the years. So, when our Top Review NZ team set out to explore more of Queenstown, I knew I had to take my pizza obsession to the next level. I explored every nook and cranny to find the best pizzas in town.

And now, I present to you a list of the must-visit pizza places in Queenstown. Make sure that your wallet and stomach are ready!

1. Italian Way

Address: 827 Frankton Road, Frankton

Contact Details: +64 210 809 1933

Operating Hours:

  • Wednesday and Thursday – 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM
  • Friday and Saturday – 12:00 PM to 8:30 PM
  • Sunday – 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM

Pricing: $

What’s the best way to have pizza? The Italian Way, of course. This well-known mobile caterer combines local and Italian produce so customers can find their way to delicious (that’s their slogan).

I’ve mentioned that I’m a ham and cheese lover, so that’s what I ordered during my visit. I love that the dough is not too soft and chewy, while the golden brown crust has enough crisp on the edges. The creamy texture of the melted cheese flawlessly complements the ham and sauce.

The overall taste? Hmm, delicious. Their pizza indeed helped me find my way to delicious. It’s one of the tastiest and most satisfying ham and cheese pizzas I’ve had in a while. Try it out, and maybe you may become a ham and cheese lover too.

2. Lokal Kitchen & Bar

Website: https://www.lokalqt.co.nz/

Address: 155 Fernhill Road, Fernhill

Contact Details: +64 3 442 5444

Operating Hours:

  • Tuesday to Thursday – 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM
  • Friday to Sunday – 12:00 PM to 9:00 PM

Pricing: $

Another great spot worth your precious money and time is Lokal Kitchen & Bar. This is a restaurant, so expect other appetising food aside from our beloved pie of joy.

Let me share my experience eating one of their old-time favourites: cheesy garlic pizza (I love cheese!). The well-leavened dough and the yeasty flavour of the crust are enough for me to crave more. Plus, the melted mozzarella and garlic oil make the pizza even better.

If you’re a seafood lover, try their Morrocan seafood pizza. It’s one of their signature dishes, so expect to love it like the seafood pizzas you’ve tasted before. Some of the seafood ingredients they use are prawns and blue cod, a fish exclusively found in New Zealand.

3. Rakau

Website: https://www.rakauqueenstown.co.nz/

Address: 170 Arthurs Point Road, Arthurs Point

Contact Details: +64 22 654 9887

Operating Hours:

  • Monday to Sunday – 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM

Pricing: $

Rakau stands out on the list as a true champion of New Zealand flavours in pizza. They use locally sourced ingredients in all their pizzas. They make pizzas through wood-fired cooking, using red beech wood specifically as firewood.

I ordered a selfie-sized prosciutto, and I think I made a good decision. I love its simple but mouthwatering appearance.

When it comes to the ingredients, I can say that they should be really proud of the locally sourced produce they use, especially the cheese. They get their good-tasting cheese from another local Queenstown business, Gibbston Valley Cheese.

4. Francesca’s Mobile Pizza

Address:  Visit their website for their weekly location

Contact Details: +64 210 232 4181

Pricing: $

Another wood-fired pizza on the list is Francesca’s Mobile Pizza.

What’s the difference between them and Rakau? Francesca’s Mobile Pizza serves different towns every day (like Italian Way’s truck).

I tried the latest addition to their menu, Mr. T. It’s their only pizza with pineapple (their regulars requested it). Other ingredients included are champagne ham, mozzarella (yum!), and their homemade tomato sauce.

What stands out the most on the ingredients is their homemade Napoli tomato sauce. It has a bright red colour—a must for tomato sauce—and a smooth, slightly chunky texture. You can say that they used flavourful ingredients upon tasting it.

5. Bella Cucina

Website: https://www.bellacucina.co.nz/

Address: 6 Brecon Street

Contact Details: +64 3 567 4332

Operating Hours:

  • Monday to Sunday – 12:00 PM to 2:30 PM, 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM

Pricing: $

Bella Cucina is an Italian eatery offering an affordable and enjoyable casual dining experience. When I entered the place, I immediately smelled the aroma of Italy, which was coming from their huge wood-fired oven.

My friend and I (yes, I brought friends this time) tried their prosciutto (they recommended it). It packs ingredients you wouldn’t usually find in this kind of pizza, such as mortadella and caramelised onion. We loved the airy crust, giving it a soft and tender texture you can’t resist.

If you want two kinds of cheese on your pizza, go for their Margherita. It has locally sourced mozzarella and imported buffalo mozzarella (a type of cheese from the milk of an Italian water buffalo).

6. Frankton Pizzeria

Website: https://franktonpizzeria.co.nz/

Address: 1085 Frankton Road, Frankton

Contact Details: +64 3 451 1271

Operating Hours:

  • Monday – 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM, 4:30 PM to 9:00 PM
  • Tuesday to Sunday – 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM

Pricing: $

A restaurant where quality meets affordability: That’s what Frankton Pizzeria wants them to be known for.

I like their honesty that their dishes are not 100% allergen-free. I believe it’s natural for all pizzas, but for them to mention it is definitely commendable for me.

You wanna know what’s unique about them? Their enticing vegan-friendly pizzas. You have six to choose from for the same price each. My mum is a big fan of vegan pizzas, so we went for the dairy-free Vegan Lover. My mum and I loved it, especially the falafel topping.

To satisfy my cheese obsession, I ordered Cheese & Cheese for takeout. It’s listed as one of their all-time favourite pizzas, so I expected to eat a great pie once we got home. I wasn’t upset with the combined parmesan, mozzarella, and other kinds of cheese in one dough!

7. Fat Badgers Pizza Bar

Website: https://fatbadgerspizza.com/

Address: 33 Camp Street

Contact Details: +64 800 749 927

Operating Hours:

  • Monday to Sunday – 12:00 PM to 11:00 PM

Pricing: $$

Fat Badgers Pizza Bar is the place to be if you’re a vegan pizza lover. If Frankton Pizzeria has six vegan-friendly pizzas, this New York-style pizza has seven (plus many vegan sides as well). When I saw this on their website, I knew I had to take my mum with me again.

When asked what they thought was their best vegan pizza, they said Vegan Princess, so that’s what we ordered. Some of its visible ingredients are mushrooms and spinach. The combination of sundried tomatoes and vegan mozzarella gave it enough sweetness.

Overall, the dish is a must-eat if you love vegan pizzas (my mum can testify to that). We also loved that they used garlic oil. It enhanced the crust’s texture and flavour, making it chewier and giving it a nutty, bitter taste.

8. The London

Website: https://www.thelondon.co.nz/

Address: 36 Shotover Street

Contact Details: +64 3 441 1142

Operating Hours:

  • Monday to Sunday – 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM

Pricing: $

See London by day, see London by night in New Zealand: that’s how The London wants to make an impression. To know if they can really make us experience London nightlife, I brought my friends.

The result? The spot gave us a mixed London and New Zealand nightlife feeling.

If you love spicy pizzas, you shouldn’t miss their signature arrabiata on your visit. It’s their spiciest pizza. I’m not a big fan of spicy pizzas, but most of my friends are, so we ordered it.

As a person who doesn’t eat spicy pizzas often, I can say that their arrabiata pizza tastes good. The mixture of hot pepperoni and salami with chilli flakes is perfect for a chilly hot pizza experience. If I find it delicious, guess what my friends’ reactions are while we’re feasting on it.
